Hi Crew,

Here is this week's newsletter:

TransConflict

Member Ian Bancroft whose articles about Serbia we frequently see in the UK Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/profile/ianbancroft), is involved in a new Balkan project called TransConflict. They are "undertaking conflict transformation projects and research throughout the Western Balkans" and have an extremely interesting approach to the problems in the Balkans forged by long experience here.

Urgent accomodation request

This in from member Tatiana:

Dear friends,

My friend Joost from Gent in Belgium has an urgent problem as he can't stay in his present apartment. He's studying Slavic languages and he's been here few times.. his brother , whom I've known longer asked me to help me if I can through my friends in Bg. So if u guys know someone who knows someone ... who has or rents a studio ,or is looking for a room mate ,please let me know.

by preference: 150 euro, absolute maximum: 200 euro a month (doesn't have to be central) and I can recommend him as a very decent, well mannered guy.

p.s. it seems to be urgent

If anyone can help with this, please e-mail me.

6 Nations Rugby

The 6 Nations Rugby tournament (http://www.rbs6nations.com/en/home.php)has started with Ireland's great win over France. Its no fun watching rugby alone, so if there are any rugby fans out there looking for a few fellows to cheer along with, drop me a line or Private Message.

US Taxes in Belgrade

New member Stevan wants to know about US citizens filing taxes from Serbia:

I am wondering how many US citizens there are in Belgrade and who does their taxes themselves or how and where do they get their taxes done??? Any ideas, thoughts are welcome, the embassy doesn't have anyone and the internet has some info most of which is confusing and needlesly complex.
Sincerely,
Stevan

If you can help him, please post an answer in this thread (http://www.belgradefvc.com/forum/showthread.php?t=325).

Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra

One of the gems of Belgrade is its Philharmonic Orchestra. Check out the program in English here (http://www.bgf.co.rs/_english/).

Health Food Shops in Belgrade

Looking for recommendations for good Health Food shops in Belgrade.

I know of one on Hilandarska that is OK. There is a good one called Gastronom on Kapetan Mišina 17. There is another good place on Skadarska 47 (nr Bajloni). Do you know of any others?

FEST Film Festival 20th Feb - 1st Mar 2009

One of highlights of Belgrade's cultural calendar is the FEST film festival.

The 37th annual FEST gets underway on the 20th February and ends on 1st March.

There is an excellent program and tickets are cheap (150 dinars).

Ralph Fiennes is opening the festival this year.

Films to look out for:

Wrestler
The Bаader Meinhof Complex
The Reader ( I saw this, its excellent)

There are loads I have not yet checked out.

If anyone needs tickets from the Sava Centar, let me know, as I am there every morning and can pick some up for you.

Could you survice a Belgrade emergency?

Total scare-mongering, but worth thinking about. What would you do in an emergency in Belgrade?

Thats its for this week folks,

Kind regards,

Count me in!!!!! Having withdrawal symptoms from not getting my fix of rugby watching!!! To say I am a fan, bit of understatement, delayed birth of my son to make sure I watched England in Quarter final world cup 2003 (the year we won!!!) Please let me know when and where and i will be there in full kit and voice!!!

If you know of someone who has Sky TV and they want to watch the 6 nations but did now know how it can be accessed through channel 503 (BBC World News). press the red button then follow the on screen instructions from then on. My husband watched all 3 games this weekend much to his enjoyment. We are now living in Kovilj near Novi Sad so it is a tad far for anyone to travel to watch the games and still be able to enjoy the proverbial alcoholic becerage.

When we lived in Belgrade at first and did not have the Sky system we managed to watch the games in the Sports Bar in the city (somewhere down a little alcove street) and as word got round rapidly the bar was soon frequentexd by many expats who love the game.

Good luck.

Hi Maudels,
Please excuse my totally useless Serbian Geography but is Kovilj anywhere near Ruma as that is where I live and am an avid rugby fan. How did you manage to get Sky TV I thought you couldn't purchase that here? I have local cable but that showed none of the matches and not one bar in Ruma showed them either!!! :-( Hopefully, this thread is going to start a rugby supporters group, we have plenty of time to practise for the world cup and get our vocals in order!!!

Hmm..... sky TV... I would love to be able to access this in Belgrade. My boyfriend is in London and I'm pretty sure he visits me around English Premiere League fixtures.

Also, regarding the health food stores... have you been to the one in Kalenic? I'm completely terrible with street names. Not having a car will do that to you. Perhaps one of the ones you mentioned was that one.
